Jessica Mathiau, Drunk Vermont Mom, Made Young Child Drive Her Home
42-Year-Old Arrested, Charged With Child Endangerment
Jessica Mathiau, a drunk 42-year-old mom of Brattleboro, Vermont, was arrested Saturday evening for attempting to have her young child drive her home because she was too intoxicated, according to reports. Police spotted Mathiau's car parked in the middle of a street, and after approaching the vehicle, they found a child estimated to be between the ages of 10 and 12 in the driver's seat.
Jessica Mathiau's drunken state led her to trust her son to get behind the wheel and hopefully pass for an adult, but apparently not enough to allow him to drive freely. She pulled the emergency brake of the car several times in traffic on Sunset Lake Road, according to the WPTZ. During one of these instances, she fell into a "drunken stupor" in the passenger seat and the car remained in the middle of the street.
Brattleboro police arrested the 42-year-old mother around 6 p.m. for attempting to have her too-young and unlicensed child drive her home. Mathiau was charged with child endangerment for the ordeal.
Though the child's age could not be confirmed at the time of the mother's arrest, authorities did note that the young boy was most certainly "a juvenile." The legal driving age in Vermont is 16.
Jessica Mathiau is due in court at the end of the month to answer for her charges. It is unknown if she has retained an attorney, or whether this is her first alcohol-related offense.
