John Romero, Adrian Carmack Use Kickstarter for New FPS Project
Remember that first-person shooter game called "Doom"? For those who were already hooked up to FPS games back in 1993, then they would know how Doom revolutionized the way games of that kind of genre were made. Apparently, its makers, John Romero and Adrian Carmack are back in play after more than 20 years, and this time, they unveiled a new FPS project to be called "Blackroom."
The co-founders of id Software are reportedly turning to Kickstarter to create a game that is centered on a holographic world that has spiraled out of control. It will officially be under the development of Night Work Games and is planned to be released on multiple platforms, including Mac and PC by 2018. According to a statement released by the game studio, it will feature a ten-hour single player mode as well as six multiplayer maps. However, Romero, in an interview with Polygon, said that they don't intend it to be free-to-play and that there isn't any discussion about console integration, at least for the moment.
The game story's main protagonist is Santiago Sonora, an engineer who works at a holographic simulation company, where something goes terribly wrong with the simulations acting up in ways they weren't supposed to. Based on the information from the company release, there will be several game modes and settings planned for Blackroom, including hellish infernos and hardcore military simulation, interstellar space, the Wild West and ghost towns, pirate galleons, and others.
And because the development of the game is headed by Romero and Carmack, expect similar things that made Doom very popular in the past. This means that there should be traditional characteristics of FPS games like fast movements, rocket jumps, strafing, and brutal kills. Romero will reportedly be the game lead while Carmack will serve as the art director, which by the way were the very same responsibilities they held back in id Software.
