Jon Favreau News: Producer Believes Superhero Genre to Stay, Virtual Reality is the Future of Movies
There is no denying that superhero-themed movies have ruled the box office over the years. While there are some who think that the genre would soon fade away, producer Jon Favreau doesn't share the same opinion.
For Favreau, superhero movies will be around for a long time as long as the team behind their creation can successfully create their films in the like of "Guardians of the Galaxy," which he says is awe-inspiring despite being an independent film.
"If you stamp that as a 'superhero' movie, then I think superhero movies are going to be around for a long time," the producer said as he spoke to The Hollywood Reporter.
Favreau revealed that his 2008 "Iron Man" paved the way for other Marvel superheroes to be incarnated on the big screen. Not only did the film open the doors for other superheroes based on the creations of the publishing house, it also propelled Robert Downey, Jr.'s career to greater heights, too.
"There was a lot of pressure because if that first film had failed, the IP was collateral. If we didn't make money, they could have lost the rights to all their characters," he said.
Apart from believing that superhero films will stay for a while, Farveau also recognizes the importance of technology in future film creations. Specifically, the producer believes that virtual reality will play a big role in the movie industry, labeling the technology as both a best friend and an enemy of the movie industry.
Farveau believes that only one definitive movie that uses virtual reality is all that it takes for the audiences to truly believe that it is, indeed, the future of the movie industry. However, at this point in time, the industry is still uncertain on how to incorporate the technology to the films being produced, including the superhero films.
"We just don't know what to do with it yet," he admitted.
