Jon Hamm, Jennifer Westfeldt split: Calling it quits after 18 years
It certainly seems that splits are in the air in Hollywood recently, as couples who have been together for more than a decade are calling it quits left and right. The latest couple to have reportedly decided to go their separate ways are Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt.
According to People, the couple who have been together for 18 years released a statement, along with the official announcement of their split through their publicist Annett Wolf, saying, "With great sadness, we have decided to separate, after 18 years of love and shared history. We will continue to be supportive of each other in every way possible moving forward."
The "Mad Men" star has had quite a rough start this year, as he overcame his fight against alcohol abuse around March. During this time, he had acknowledged Westfeldt for supporting him all through the rough time. Despite this, the couple had still been under scrutiny afterward, with news of a breakup plaguing them left and right. Around April, the couple slammed down the rumors of a split. However, after not being seen together since July, the fire had just been further fueled.
Hamm and Westfeld, who do not have any kids, ironically met during the shooting of the film "Friends with Kids" in 1997. They have been together since then, and though the lack of kids is fairly noticeable to the public, Hamm had been seemingly quite contented with his life with Westfeldt. Westfeldt shared to New York Times about her feelings on this, saying, "I never thought I'd be this age and not have kids. But my life has also gone in a million ways I never anticipated. I kept feeling like I'd wake up with absolute clarity, and I haven't. And we have a pretty great life together. The chance that we'll regret it doesn't seem like a compelling enough reason to do it."
Although the couple had never been married, their relationship lasted longer than any Hollywood marriages. The 44-year-old actor has always been quite expressive of how lucky he felt to have the screenwriter in his life, as cited in one of his interviews last year in which he said, "Our lives are entwined. It's a long time [together]. I'm definitely the guy that repeats his stories! Mostly it's just paying attention and keeping engaged and not succumbing to inertia or going through the motions."
