Jonathan Taylor Thomas: 'No Regrets' About Taking Break From Hollywood
Jonathan Taylor Thomas walked into the lives of girls everywhere with his starring role on "Home Improvement," but once the show ended, so did his career in Hollywood- until now. Thomas recently guest-starred with his TV dad, Tim Allen, on his show "Last Man Standing" and is getting back into the public eye after some time off.
"I'd been going nonstop since I was 8-years-old," Taylor told People magazine. "I wanted to go to school, to travel, and have a bit of a break."
He was eventually given less of a role on "Home Improvement" much to the dismay of teen girls everywhere. His character was written to be studying in Costa Rica, giving Thomas a bit of a break from the spotlight. He made it back for a few episodes in the final season, and the show finally wrapped in 1999.
Thomas then decided to fulfill his dream of going to school and traveling by studying at Harvard, Columbia and then abroad at St. Andrew's University in Scotland. He absolutely loved his time as a full-time student and relished the opportunity "to sit in a big library amongst books and students."
Now Thomas is back in Los Angeles, only this time he is working behind-the-scenes and on a schedule he is setting.
"I watch a lot of movies; I hike; I stay up on shows and theater," Thomas explained. He spends the rest of his time writing scripts and directing; when asked if he had any regrets about taking the time off from Hollywood, Thomas insisted he had none.
"I never took fame too seriously. It was a great period in my life, but it doesn't define me. When I think back on the time, I look at it with a wink. I focus on the good moments I had, not that I was on a lot of magazine covers."
Thomas' appearance on "Last Man Standing" was the first since 2005.
