Kathy Bates Mastectomy: Others Facing Breast Cancer Inspired

Kathy Bates has become an inspiration to many after openly admitting that she recently underwent a double breast mastectomy following a diagnosis with cancer.

The Oscar award-winning actress was diagnosed with breast cancer in September of this year. The news was difficult to manage considering the actress had already overcome a battle with ovarian cancer in 2003- a personal detail that she did not reveal to the public until 2007.

This time around, however, Bates was much more willing to share her experience in her fight against the cancer.

"After much consideration, I underwent a double mastectomy," the actress told People magazine in a recent interviews "Luckily, I don't have to undergo radiation or chemo. My family calls me Kat because I always land on my feet and thankfully this is no exception."

Bates story could serve as an inspiration to many other women who are facing the same issues and faced with the difficult decision of whether or not it is appropriate to get a mastectomy.

After receiving a positive diagnosis from the doctor, the actress has now relayed that she is ready to head back to work and take the bull by the horns. Reports suggest that it has only been weeks since the procedure was performed.

"My doctors have assured me I'm going to be around for a long time," she says. "I'm looking forward to getting back to work doing what I love to do."

Fans of the star offered their support and prayers.

"Stay Strong. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your recovery. Get well," one user wrote on the People blog.

"To one of my alltime favorite actresses, best wishes to you in your continued struggles with cancer, another user added. "I will SO miss Harry's Law, but I am glad to read that you are doing well."
