Katy Perry Game App News: 'Kim Kardashian: Hollywood' Game Creators Sign 5-Year Deal With Singer
Glu Mobile signed an exclusive five-year agreement with Grammy-award winning singer Katy Perryearlier this month to develop a mobile game featuring the singer's "likeness, voice, and personality," according to reports. This is going to be Glu Mobile's second celebrity-based game, following the very popular and widely downloaded "Kim Kardashian: Hollywood" which was released summer of 2014.
The New York Post describes the new game as one that "will introduce players to a digital playground of global success and talent." The first game is targeted for a late fall release and will be made for both iOS and Android devices.
Katy Perry has an estimated following of over 170 million on various social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, according to Glu. This trumps Kim Kardashian's fan base estimated at about 78 million. It was this same fan base that spent $73.4 million on the Kardashian game from its launch in June 2014 until the end of 2014.
The Kim Kardashian game was a top grosser in 2014 and is said to "account for a third of Glu Mobile's adjusted revenue for 2014," according to a Reuters report. News about the partnership with Perry, according to a Bloomberg report, also boosted the company's shares by 12 percent in after-hours New York trading after the announcement was made late Wednesday.
Furthermore, Glu is confident that the Katy Perry game to bring in more revenue, and have adjusted their revenue forecast for 2015 accordingly. In a statement, the company said, "Glu is focused on building the premier Hollywood gaming platform and improving the annuity characteristics of our franchises. We look forward to our growth in 2015 and beyond with confidence."
Glu's CEO Niccolo de Masi told USA Today that "(Perry) is a cultural icon and we expect to translate key elements of her success into an innovative, highly entertaining mobile experience."
