'Kingsman 3' News, Release Date: Taron Egerton Teases Trilogy; Will Merlin Be Back?

Matthew Vaughn's "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" killed off an important character, but that does not necessarily mean that he is gone for good.

The sequel to 2015's "Kingsman: The Secret Service" saw Eggsy (Taron Egerton), Harry (Colin Firth), and Merlin (Mark Strong) trying to stop Julianne Moore's twisted drug lord, Poppy, from killing a good chunk of the world's population. However, Eggsy stepped on one of the land mines in the jungle surrounding Poppy's headquarters. In order to save Eggsy and ensure the mission is successful, Merlin took his place and sacrificed himself for the greater good.

Merlin's dramatic death certainly surprised some fans and left others heartbroken. However, Strong, who played the John Denver-loving intelligence operative, told Metro.co.uk that there might be hope for his character. After all, Firth's Harry was revealed to be alive in the sequel after getting shot in the head by Samuel L. Jackson's Richmond Valentine in the first film.

"All [director] Matt [Vaughn] said to me was 'no one dies in the "Kingsman" universe,' so you never know," Strong said.

Of course, bringing Merlin back may prove to be difficult since he was blown to smithereens right in front of viewers' eyes. But fans surely have their fingers crossed.

Also, a third "Kingsman" film is rumored though nothing has been confirmed thus far. Vaughn told Deadline earlier this year that he already has "a big idea" for it, but another sequel is dependent on the success of "The Golden Circle."

Taron Egerton, who plays Eggsy, told The Hollywood Reporter that they envision a trilogy and that he is already aware of the storyline Vaughn has in mind. "The idea for the third one will blow everything you think you know about it out of the water," he teased.

The Welsh actor also revealed that he already has an actor in mind for the part of the villain, though he is not convinced that the role fits.

"I know who the character is and it's nothing like this actor, but I love Dwayne Johnson," he said. "I think he's the right fit for it, but the villain role Matthew has described to me is not Dwayne Johnson."
