Laverne Cox News: Actress to Be the First Transgender to Portray Trans Major Role in 'Doubt'
"Doubt" is the first TV series that will feature a transgender character. It is also the first time that a transgender actor has been tapped to play a transgender role, giving Cox another honor to her name.
Following the praise she received for her performance in "Orange is the New Black," Laverne Cox is once again set to go down in history as the first transgender actor to portray a transgender main role in the upcoming CBS drama "Doubt."
According to Deadline, "Doubt" is the first TV series that will feature a transgender character. It is also the first time that a transgender actor has been tapped to play a transgender role, giving Cox another honor to her name.
While the 31-year-old was originally part of the initial plot, the story wasn't given a green light last season. This time, Cox is set to star alongside Katherine Heigl, who will portray a "smart, chic, successful defense lawyer at a boutque firm [who] starts to fall for her charismatic client, who may or may not be guilty of a crime."

Other stars who are part of the major cast include Steven Pasquale, Dulé Hill, Elliot Gould, Dreama Walker, and Kobi Libii.
"Doubt" was supposed to go on air with another CBS drama titled "Drew," but the latter has been canceled and the Heigl and Cox-starring legal series will now join other shows such as "Bull," "Training Day," "MacGyver," and "Pure Genius."
Meanwhile, Cox took to Instagram to share her joy regarding the new project. "#Doubt was picked up for series by cbs today. Let's celebrate," she wrote, along with a video of her posing and giving off excitement feels for her audience.
Cox is famous for her role in "Orange is the New Black," but she is also known for other ground-breaking achievements she has received that inspired many other transgender actors in the industry.
According to Refinery29 News, Cox is the first trans-woman to appear on the cover of TIME Magazine for its May 2014 issue. She is also the first to be honored with an Emmy nomination.
Among many other primaries, she has a Madame Tussauds wax figure -- once again a first in the transgender community. Despite the bullying she received during her younger years for acting differently compared to her male classmates, she has conquered all her fears and is now known for her acting skills as well as being an LGBT advocate.
