Actress Mariska Hargitay has played the role of Olivia Benson on "Law & Order: SVU" for 16 years, and to mark the start of a new season, the actress sat down for an interview with James Lipton for "Inside the Actors Studio."

The actress opened up about how she came to embody the role of Benson, revealing that she spent a lot of time with real law enforcers to research the role. She also learned how to shoot a gun, and the actress said that she can now spot pickpockets.

She also talked about her former cast mate Christopher Meloni who played the part of Detective Elliot Stabler on the show for 12 years.

"I'm so grateful for my time with him. I think Chris is incapable of lying," said Hargitay of her former co-star. "He is a truth-teller, he's committed to the truth at all costs. I loved his passion and commitment … I loved acting with him and I love him as a person."

The actress also shared some changes that will take place in the show in the new season. It can be recalled that Olivia has taken in foster baby Noah during season 15, and she is seen getting attached to the baby. However, life will be far from being idyllic for Olivia, as Noah is kidnapped during the premiere episode of the upcoming season, as seen in the promo titled "#SaveBabyBenson."

The promo also features a man blatantly issuing a threat to harm the child right in front of Olivia and Barba (Raul Espinoza). The sneak peek is a reminder of what Benson could face if ever she decides to keep the child.

"Law & Order: SVU" Season 16 will premiere on Sept. 24 on NBC.
