'Legend of Conan' News: Sequel Takes Place 30 Years After Original

In this era of sequels, remakes and reboots, another cult classic has joined the fray. A sequel to the 1982 movie "Conan the Barbarian" is in the works, as confirmed by its star, Arnold Schwarzenegger and its writer/producer Chris Morgan. The sequel titled "Legend of Conan" is being developed with Universal Pictures.

Morgan recently shared some details about the upcoming sequel. According to a report in The Wrap, Morgan described the movie as such: "Think 'Unforgiven' … with a sword-wielding barbarian." It will follow the story of Conan, 30 years after the events in the 1982 movie.

"Our tone is a logical extension of the character established in the '82 film … but 30 years later. When we meet him again, Conan has been many things over the course of his life -- a thief, a warrior, a pirate, a king, a legend -- and is now an older man," the producer told a fan website.

Morgan also hinted that the movie will be bringing back "at least three" characters from the original film, plus Conan of course, but he has not yet revealed which characters this will be. The report speculated that it may be Conan's trusted archer companion Subotai, played by Gerry Lopez, and the sorcerer Thulsa Doom, who was then played by James Earl Jones. Another report in Cinema Blend talks about other characters worthy of returning, such as The Wizard who was responsible for chronicling Conan's adventures as the film's narrator, and some of the warriors former lovers.

The Cinema Blend also confirms Morgan's statements that the film will be a direct sequel to "Conan the Barbarian" as it seeks to follow and continue the mythology of original film, and possibly even that of the 1985 "Conan the Destroyer." In the 1982 film's epilogue, the Wizard speaks of Conan as becoming a King "by his own hand."

One of the sequel's producers, Fredrik Malmberg emphasized that the studio "ordered a film that would be a 'worthy successor' to the 1982 Milius film." The film also helped launch the career of Schwarzenegger as one of the world's biggest action stars. It was based on a series of novels by Robert E. Howard. John Milius co-wrote the screenplay with Oliver Stone, and he also helmed the film.

"Legend of Conan" will be produced by Morgan and Malmberg. It has yet to get a release date.
