'LEGO Minifigures Online' Coming in June 29, No Longer Free-to-Play

Three years after it was announced, the "LEGO Minifigures Online" game is finally arriving on June 29, for PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android. The game will no longer be free-to-play, so players need to purchase the game.

The PC version will be selling for $29.99, while the mobile versions are priced at $4.99. Mobile versions will only have one world available but players will have the option to buy other worlds through in-app purchases.

The game is developed by Funcom, the same developer for "The Secret World" which is also known for developing online games, especially massively multiplayer online games.

"LEGO Minifigures Online" is described as a massively multiplayer online or MMO game that features the company's LEGO Minifigures theme which consists of numerous characters and settings, such as space and medieval. Players can unlock different characters and their abilities as they go through the game. They can also unlock special characters by purchasing Minifigures blind bags, which ties the game closely to actual Minifigures merchandise.

The game, which has been in closed beta from June to December 2014, was originally announced as a free-to-play, so it's a surprise that the game will be released for pay after all. Funcom however asserted that the game has "drastically improved the game" since the beta.

"To ensure a fresh, new, and even higher-quality experience for everyone, the developers at Funcom have spent months overhauling the game in preparation for this launch. New features and content, such as unique events, cinematics, voice acting, and a fun and engaging story are included, as well as numerous gameplay additions and major improvements throughout the entire game," they said in a statement.

There is some good news for those who played the beta and spent some amount or any amount of money during the beta – they will be given to the final game for free. Plus, their gameplay progress during the beta will be carried over as well.

LEGO hopes that this new game, together with another LEGO-inspired building game "LEGO Worlds" will prove to be more successful than its previous foray in gaming, the ill-fated LEGO Universe.
