Lego Movie News: 'The Lego Batman Movie' and 2 Other Lego Movies Get Release Dates
Over a year after the release of "The Lego Movie," Warner Brothers announced the release dates of three more Lego movies in the pipeline.
A spinoff of the first movie which is still untitled and is temporarily called "The Lego Batman Movie," will be the first to bow on February 17, 2017. On September 22, 2017, "Ninjago" will be released in theaters. The final movie to be released on May 18, 2018 will be the sequel of the first movie, aptly called "The Lego Movie Sequel."
The first movie, according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, was a "surprise hit" which fuelled plans by Warner Bros. to seriously consider developing a franchise for it. The film grossed $468.7 million worldwide in 2014.
"The Lego Batman Movie" will see the return of Will Arnett as the voice of the Dark Knight. One of the first movie's directors, Phil Lord, said that this Batman movie "will explore Batman's emotions and have him trying to find happiness," according to a report in IGN. In earlier reports, Lord had also described the animated movie's action scenes "incredible" and "impressive." Arnett on the other hand called some of the footage he had seen so far as "mind-boggling."
The movie is being directed by Chris McKay. The script was penned by Seth Grahame-Smith of "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies").
No plot details are yet available for both "Ninjago" and "The Lego Movie Sequel."
"Ninjago" will be helmed by Charlie Bean of "Tron: Uprising" with a script from Dan and Kevin Hageman, who both wrote "Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu."
"The Lego Movie Sequel" is being scripted by Phil Lord and Chris Miller and will be directed by Rob Schrab.
Signalling that there may be more Lego films coming up, Warner Bros. domestic distribution president, Dan Fellman said, "These three films already in the pipeline are just the beginning of a creative and diverse animation slate that will be delighting audiences for years to come."
