Leonardo DiCaprio News: 'The Revenant' Actor Believes China Can Be a Climate Change Hero
The recently heralded Oscar Best Actor Leonardo DiCaprio has expressed his belief that China can be a driving force in the world's quest against environmental issues.
"I think that China has made radical movements forward," DiCaprio said during a press conference for his "The Revenant" movie.
The actor believes that the country has the opportunity to change the world, citing that China is on the right direction in its quest to go for clean and sustainable energy source to reduce carbon emissions that damage the ozone layer and worsen climate change.
"As we all know, the United States and China are the two biggest contributors, and I think that China has made radical movements forward as far as alternative energy and ways to be sustainable… I really think that China can be the hero of the environmental movement, they can be the hero of the climate change movement," the award-winning actor said.
DiCaprio was in China to promote "The Revenant," the movie that he top-bills and paved the way for him to finally bag an Oscar statuette. During the movie's opening weekend in China alone, "The Revenant" was already able to rake in $33 million, bringing its worldwide gross to almost $500 million.
China is the world's second biggest box-office market next to Northern America. DiCaprio is a popular name and figure among the moviegoers in this country, thanks to his 1997 global hit, the "Titanic." The Chinese refer to him as Little Lee.
DiCaprio is a known environment advocate. During the Oscars held last month, Dicaprio didn't fail to bring up the issue of climate change in his acceptance speech. In January, he met with Pope Francis to discuss how to curb climate change. He believes that the Pope's encyclical is one of the most important things about the history of climate change that has ever been written.
"It's a sin to destroy our planet.… He's been inspiring and revolutionary to come out and be outspoken about the issue of climate change and endorse the scientific community," DiCaprio said in reference to the pontiff.
