'Lethal Weapon' Season 2: Riggs, Murtaugh Take Troublesome Antics to Mexico on a Hunt for Miranda's Killer

A villain's need to taunt coupled with Martin Riggs' (Clayne Crawford) growing need for revenge both served as Roger Murtaugh's (Damon Wayans) one saving grace in the season finale of "Lethal Weapon." So, despite an earlier request to be reassigned with a new partner, Murtaugh ended up going after Riggs in Mexico, not because he felt responsible or indebted, but because he finally came to terms with the fact that Riggs has now become an indispensable part of his family.

The first season may be over, but the Riggs-Murtaugh partnership is far from being done. And as the countdown starts ticking for the show's second season, the biggest question in every fan's mind is, "What's next?"

The entire first season was set in Los Angeles, giving the two men a home-court advantage over their adversaries, along with the freedom to do whatever it took to take a criminal down, nothing short of blowing up a car or jumping off tall buildings. Capt. Brooks Avery (Kevin Rahm) understood their dynamics enough to let a lot of things pass, even covering for them on occasion.

But in Mexico, Riggs and Murtaugh have no jurisdiction. They have no Avery to bail them out of tight spots, and no Trish Murtaugh (Keesha Sharp) to keep them level-headed when they start thinking about choking each other up.

They will be on their own, and chasing down the Cartel's big boss, Tito Flores (Danny Mora), will not really help their case in any way. Moreover, since Riggs already feels like Murtaugh has abandoned him by asking for a new partner, they may have to patch some things up first before they can work together as a team again.

In an interview with Screener, executive producer Matt Miller said that he has no idea what season 2 is going to be yet, but that he already has an idea how it would end. If the finale of the first season saw Murtaugh almost giving up on Riggs, will the entire second season serve to strengthen their bond, or pull them out of each other's life completely?

Miller also teased that things will be switched up when the second season comes around.

"[I] think since Season 1 was designed so much around Murtaugh pulling Riggs out of the abyss, in Season 2 we're going to reverse those roles a little bit. It's going to be on Riggs to pull Murtaugh out," Miller said.

"Lethal Weapon" season 2 is expected to air later this year during the fall TV season.
