LG V20 Release Date, Rumors and Updates: New Flagship Smartphone Coming this September? Specs and Price Details
LG's newest top of the line flagship smartphone, the V20, will be released on September 6 in San Francisco.
LG sales
As LG suffers dwindling overall sales in the smartphone market brought about by the LG G5 earlier this year, the tech company seeks for the V20 to be their saving grace.
Tech analysts considered the smartphone's predecessor, the LG V10 as a tough competitor to the likes of the Galaxy Note 5 and iPhone 6s Plus due to its size and top-notch specs. However, the V10 barely held its own with the general public, as it still didn't do so well with the sales. The new V20 aims to build upon the aspects of the V10 and G5 that both the tech world and the general public would want to have.
Android Nougat
Android, the Google-based mobile operating system, has officially announced that the LG V20 would be the first smartphone to be released with its newest software, the Android 7.0 Nougat. This breaks away from Google's tradition of releasing its latest OS through their own entries to the smartphone arena, the Nexus devices.
Rumored specifications
Like its previous generation, the V20 will once again highlight its audio hardware capabilities. LG has earlier announced that the device will be the first smartphone to include a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC that is said to be the best of its class.
With photo and render leaks of the V20 emerging online, hardware specifications are no longer bound to guesswork. The screen size is projected to be at 5.5 inches, down from the V10's 5.7-inch display. This is said to accommodate the secondary screen, one of the most unique features of LG's V lineup. The secondary screen, sitting on top of the main display, remains untouched. The display will most likely be an LCD Quad HD display, again reflecting the V10 and G5.
LG G5's camera trickles down to the V20, as a camera bump with dual rear-facing sensors can be seen on the leaks. The dual front-facing camera setup, however, didn't make the cut. A rear-mounted fingerprint scanner is also present, but the volume buttons have been relegated to the edge of the phone.
Internal specs are expected to be in line with other flagship smartphones in the market. It would be run by either a Snapdragon 820 or 821, with 4GB to 6GB of RAM, and 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, with an option to expand via a microSD slot.
Smartphone modularity brought by LG G5 also makes its way through the projected 4000 mAh battery slot. A module release button is visible in the leaked renders. Other modules, or Friends as LG calls them, are expected to arrive with the release.
Price and final thoughts
At an expected price point of around $650 to $700, the V20 is clearly competing with smartphone giants. With competitors such as the Galaxy Note 7 and the soon-to-arrive iPhone 7 lineup, will the LG V20 hold up its own this time?
