'Little Mermaid' Live Action Movie Update: Has the Film Found Its Director? Ariel's Story Inspires More Stage Productions
As exciting progress is made in Disney's upcoming live-action adaptation of another one of its classics, "The Little Mermaid," the love for the classic fairytale story is reflected on the Broadway side of things too.
At least two stage productions inspired by Ariel and her story will be brought to the stage next year. Magical Starlight Theatre will present a musical "The Little Mermaid" production set to take place on Jan. 12 to 14 and again on Jan. 19 to 21, 2018 at Naperville Central High School.
On the other hand, Music Theatre Wichita will also be presenting a production titled "Disney's The Little Mermaid" from Aug. 8 to 18 where the audience can "explore this magical world under the sea as the cast goes on a journey to find their voice and explore the new world above the water."
The production will feature memorable songs that Alan Menken created for the original including "Part of Your World," "Kiss the Girl" and "Under the Sea."
Menken will be back to work on the music for the live-action "The Little Mermaid" movie by Disney. He is set to write new songs along with "Hamilton" star Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Rob Marshall, who recently directed the remake of the Emily Blunt-headlined "Mary Poppins" movie releasing Christmas next year, is the top choice to direct the film. According to Deadline, Disney has offered him the project already and he is now reading the script by Jane Goldman.
Whether or not Marshall will be the official director of the live-action "The Little Mermaid" movie, it will not be made official until after the holidays. However, sources expect him to join the project after the new year.
There is no word yet on who will play the role of Ariel in "The Little Mermaid" live-action adaptation, but Lindsay Lohan has expressed interest for the part.
