Liverpool News, Rumors Update 2014: Team Reveals Reason Why Captain Steven Gerrard Was Left Out
Liverpool midfielder and club captain Steven Gerrard was left out of the starting line-up during their match against Stoke Saturday, which resulted in a 1-0 win for the team. That day was also the 16th anniversary of his debut as a professional football player. While being left out, former Liverpool winger John Barnes still thinks Gerrard is still good enough for the club.
"At this stage of his career, his best at this moment is still good enough," says Barnes over a radio interview.
Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool manager, has said that Gerrard has been offered a new deal by the club. The contract sees the veteran player doing a reduced role which means less pay. However, Rodgers had said that money is not an issue with Gerrard. If things don't go well though, the player could be moving abroad and playing for the MLS.
"Steven's had 16 incredible years here and I believe he can continue to work at his level for the next couple of years. But there are other factors involved that are as much about life as they are about football. One thing I know absolutely is that it is not about money. Iti s not about finances. I'm sure in time Steven will talk through the things he had to consider but for me, there is no drama," said Rodgers.
"I can only think about the situation here and I hope there is a solution with the club and the representatives. It is not about the money, it is about the time of his career in terms of playing. He is a big talent," he added.
While there have been reports that there was a misunderstanding between Gerrard and Rodgers – apparently from the fact that he was not included in the starting lineup – the 34-year old midfielder had denied those reports.
