Los Angeles Chargers Cornerback Jason Verrett to Undergo Season-Ending Knee Surgery
Los Angeles Chargers starting cornerback Jason Verrett will have to end the season on the injured reserve list for the third time in four years.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Verrett has decided to undergo surgery to repair his injured left knee and he's expected to miss the remainder of the season. The Chargers have confirmed that they are placing him on the injured reserve list and promoting linebacker Nick Dzubnar to the active roster.
"It was never right in my opinion just watching him in practice. But he's such a competitor (that) he kept wanting to go out, save himself and play the first week. But he wasn't able to play to his standard. So we just want him to get healthy," Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn said, via the team's official website.
Trevor Williams should continue to start for the Chargers in place of Verrett.
Verrett played in only four games last season before he went down with a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee. He was brought along slowly during training camp and the preseason as he continued to work his way back to the field.
The fourth-year pro started for the Chargers in their season opener against the Denver Broncos, but he experienced soreness in his surgically repaired left knee and he was ruled out of their game against the Miami Dolphins last week.
Verrett's a talented cornerback and he was even named to the Pro Bowl during the 2015 season. However, he just can't seem to stay on healthy and observers have already noted that the Chargers may have to consider parting ways with him.
"It's too bad because Verrett checks all the other boxes. He's a good teammate, a hard worker and wants to be great. But as Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre likes to say, availability is your best ability in the NFL," ESPN's Eric D. Williams said in his column.
