Los Angeles Chargers Want to Add a Young Quarterback

The Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers may be one of the most productive and durable quarterbacks in the National Football League (NFL), but he will have to hang his cleats someday. His backup, Kellen Clemens, isn't getting younger either. It's quite clear that the Chargers will have to look for Rivers' eventual successor soon, and head coach Anthony Lynn believes that now may be the time to draft a quarterback.

"I think we do have to get a young quarterback on campus and start to develop someone, because we have two veteran quarterbacks and both of them are long in the tooth. I think they have some good years left in them, don't get me wrong, but you have to start thinking about down the line, too," Lynn said during an interview at the annual league meeting last week, via the team's official website.

"I would love for a young quarterback to get in here and learn from Philip," he added.

Rivers would be the perfect mentor for a quarterback who has yet to suit up in the big leagues and he doesn't mind if the Chargers select one in this year's draft. "I'm not going to be here forever, and you know that's part of this business," Rivers said, according to the team's official website.

The Chargers have already met Notre Dame's DeShone Kizer, Texas Tech's Patrick Mahomes and Tennessee's Joshua Dobbs. North Carolina's Mitch Trubisky and Clemson's Deshaun Watson should be options as well.

One of them could be Rivers' successor. However, whoever they select in the draft may have to sit on the bench for a few years because Rivers is not ready to retire. The 35-year-old quarterback is signed through 2019 and he still has a lot left in the tank.

The Chargers have the seventh, 38th and 71st overall pick in this year's draft.
