Clearly struggling in more ways than one, the new calendar year is a new hope that things will be better for both franchises as they look to move forward.
At the moment, the Lakers are at 6-27 to remain fifth in the Pacific Division. They are games behind current leaders the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Clippers, Sacrament Kings and the Phoenix Suns are comfortably ahead of the struggling organization.
On the other hand, the Sixers have the worst record in the league with a 3-31 showing after 2015, and they are also last in their division as the Atlantic is currently led by the Toronto Raptors, with the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets above the Sixers at the moment.
Another thing to consider here is this is the last time Kobe Bryant will be facing the franchise of his hometown as everyone knows he is set to retire at the end of the season.
The two teams met already earlier in Philly, with the Sixers winning 103-91 to spoil Kobe's final homecoming.
With that in mind, the Lakers are hopefully trying to give Bryant a proper sendoff against his homegrown team with a win at Staples to give them their seventh victory of the season.
It should still be something that people will watch for the spectacle, but fans are hoping that this match will be exciting to watch.
