Los Angeles Rams, Alec Ogletree Agree to Terms on a Four-Year, $42 Million Extension
The Los Angeles Rams have succeeded in locking up one of their most productive defenders for the long term.
The Rams have announced that they have signed linebacker Alec Ogletree to a four-year extension. The team didn't disclose the financial details of the contract, but NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and ESPN's Alden Gonzalez have both reported that the deal was worth $42 million. Ogletree will reportedly receive $33 million in the first three years of the deal, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
"Alec has evolved into a true leader of our football team and we are excited to sign him to this extension," Rams general manager Les Snead said in a statement, via the team's official website.
"His teammates voted him as a captain in back-to-back seasons for a reason — and it's not only because of his production, but his character and resiliency. We look forward to Alec helping our team emerge as a consistent winner for years to come," he continued.
"I definitely want to see this franchise turn it around, and definitely want to be a part of that," Ogletree stated.
Ogletree earned second-team All-Pro honors last season after recording 136 tackles, a forced fumble, two interceptions and 11 passes defended.
The fifth-year linebacker has recorded a team-leading 54 tackles in five games this season, and he also has two sacks.
Signing Ogletree to an extension is a good start. Now the Rams have to find a way to convince Aaron Donald, Trumaine Johnson, Lamarcus Joyner and Sammy Watkins to sign a deal before their current contracts end.
Donald's holdout this offseason was a real cause for concern for the Rams because he's probably the best defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) right now and losing him would be a huge blow for them. Fortunately, his contract runs through the 2018 season so they still have a lot of time to work out a deal.
