The spinoff series is part of a multimedia project co-developed by ASCII Media Works' Dengeki G's Magazine, the music label Lantis, and the animation studio Sunrise. It features fictional schoolgirls who have come together to form an idol group called Aqours in order to keep their school from closing down. It was first launched in 2015 via music CDs and anime music videos.

A manga version followed in 2016, which ushered in a 13-episode anime series produced by Sunshine.

The series is set in Uchiura, more specifically at the ocean-side Uranohoshi Girls' Academy, which is about to close down and merge with another high school Numazu. It is Chika Takami, a girl who previously didn't have anything she wanted to do, thought about how μ's (pronounced as Muse) solved the same problem with their school by joining the "Love Live" school idol contest.

"Love Live! Sunshine!!" premieres on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 10:30 p.m. JST on Tokyo MX, Sun TV, and KBS Kyoto. It will also air on BS11 on the same date late night at 1:30 a.m. JST. Information on other broadcast schedules and online resources can be found on the series' official site.
