Luigi Mangione: 5 things to know about alleged UnitedHealthcare CEO killer
5. Missing for months, family 'shocked' over arrest
Mangione reportedly fell off the radar for about six months before the alleged murder of Thompson last week, and his family expressed shock that he would be capable of such an act, according to the Times.
Mangione's former roommate RJ Martin — the founder of Surfbreak, a co-living, co-working space in Hawaii — explained that after he had received jarring photos of Mangione's back surgery, he had planned to meet up with him again in April when he was back in Hawaii, but then he went dark.
In a since-deleted post from July, another apparent friend tweeted at Mangione, writing, "You made commitments to me for my wedding and if you can't honor them I need to know so I can plan accordingly."
Mangione's family issued a statement on Monday night in the wake of his arrest, suggesting his alleged crime caught them off-guard and that they learned of it from the news.
