'Madam Secretary' Season 3 Episode 16 Spoilers: Elizabeth Handles a Chinese Emergency

Elizabeth's (Téa Leoni) hard work to stop global warming will be threatened by the Chinese in the upcoming episode of "Madam Secretary."

In the episode titled "Swept Away," the synopsis (according to TV Guide) reveals that China wants to back out of the global climate treaty because the U.S. Secretary of State will be meeting with the Dalai Lama. The Chinese considers Elizabeth's conference with the ailing Tibetan religious leader as a slap in the face. If the country follows through with the threat, all the Americans' hard work to secure the approval of more than 200 countries in the treaty will go down the drain. Still, talking to Dalai Lama is also top priority. Will Elizabeth be able to come up with a solution that will satisfy both parties?

Elsewhere, Jay's (Sebastian Arcelus) marital problems will continue. This time around, his wife Abby (Stephanie J. Block) will surprise him with talks on custody agreement for their daughter. It looks like she has not changed her mind about divorcing him. Abby already told Jay she wanted out. He was hoping, though, that she would stick around for the sake of their kid. It has been difficult for him to focus on work because of his fights with Abby. Elizabeth even had to ask him to concentrate on his tasks, especially when he was investigating Daisy's (Patina Miller) dead boyfriend, Kevin (Justin Baldoni).

Last episode, Elizabeth traveled to the Philippines to meet with the country's new president. Datu Andrada (Joel de la Fuente) wanted to sever ties with the United States, putting the Singapore Interchange in jeopardy. Elizabeth's team has worked hard to secure the territorial treaty that would bind all the countries of the Asia Pacific together, including China. If the Philippine president backs out of the deal, other countries may follow suit. Elizabeth offered Andrada military support if he changed his mind and he seemed to be considering it. At the end of their meeting, though, the world leader made inappropriate advances towards Elizabeth, which resulted in her punching him in the face.

"Madam Secretary" season 3 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EDT on CBS.
