'Madam Secretary' Season 4 Spoilers: Dalton to Force Elizabeth to Resign?

President Dalton (Keith Carradine) may be forced to get Elizabeth (Tea Leoni) to temporarily resign in the upcoming season of "Madam Secretary."

The new installment of the CBS series is expected to be action-packed. As spoilers indicate, the US government will once again encounter both national and international emergencies. One of the storylines teased is a controversy that will involve the state secretary herself. Elizabeth is supposedly going to be embroiled in a messy gossip that will blow up due to social media.

Executive producer Barbara Hall also mentioned that one of the upcoming episodes would tackle fake news. "There's definitely a reference on how it takes off on social media," the EP said. "We show how social media allows it to be possible, how quickly it moves, and how hard of a thing it is to argue against or deal with when everybody is yelling 'fake news.'"

Speculations indicate that Elizabeth will find herself in the middle of chaos when the assistant vice minister of Timor-Leste suddenly dies while in a meeting with her. The country's president will immediately order his remains to be flown back home. Soon after, news will surface that Elizabeth may have a hand on the official's demise, and Dalton may be forced by the international community to have Elizabeth step down from her post.

Meanwhile, CBS recently sealed a multiplatform syndication deal with WE tv and Netflix. According to Deadline, WE tv acquired off-network rights for "Madam Secretary" starting in 2018, while Netflix has scored an SVOD (Subscription Video on Demand) deal that comprises all previous seasons of the series. The newest installment is said to air mid-2018. Marc Juris, president of WE tv, said that "Madam Secretary" would fit well in their roster of shows.

"Our growing viewership has demonstrated a clear interest in real and relatable characters through WE tv originals on Thursday and Friday nights and popular acquired shows like Madam Secretary, an acclaimed series that aligns well with our brand," Juris explained.

"Madam Secretary" season 4 is scheduled to start airing on Sunday, Oct. 8, at 10 p.m. EDT on CBS.
