'Madam Secretary' Season 4 Spoilers: Elizabeth Gets Embroiled in Social Media Controversy

Elizabeth (Tea Leoni) will find herself embroiled in a messy controversy that will blow up in social media in the upcoming season of "Madam Secretary."

Executive producer Barbara Hall recently told Entertainment Weekly that they would be including a storyline involving fake news in the new installment. According to her, the issue is timely and interesting, especially when viewers get to see how this could be used to destroy someone's reputation. The plot is likely connected to Elizabeth's unfortunate predicament regarding the sudden death of the assistant vice minister of Timor-Leste during a meeting with her. It has been previously teased that the Secretary of State would be accused of murdering the official.

"Fake news is not a story that is going away any time soon. We do use the words 'fake news.' We show how it happens, where it comes from, and we go beyond the party shouting 'fake news' at each other and actually show how fake news is generated, why it is generated and how it is used as a political weapon," Hall said.

"There's definitely a reference on how it takes off on social media," she added. "We show how social media allows it to be possible, how quickly it moves, and how hard of a thing it is to argue against or deal with when everybody is yelling 'fake news.'"

Based on the spoilers, Elizabeth will be at the center of deadly gossip when the Timor-Leste president abruptly orders the return of the minister's body to their home country. News that she was the one who masterminded the murder will surface, and the entire thing will escalate when the U.N General Assembly becomes involved.

Meanwhile, another storyline to look forward to in season 4 is Henry's (Tim Daly) struggles to defend his friend Dmitri (Chris Petrovski). The young Russian is supposed to formally join the Special Activities Division, but Henry's bosses are having doubts about his loyalty.

"Madam Secretary" season 4 is scheduled to start airing on Oct. 8, Sunday, at 10 p.m. EDT on CBS.
