'Mafia III' News: Open-World Crime Game Coming On October 7
After months of rumors and speculation, "Mafia III" has finally been announced by publisher 2K Games, with a release date for current generation consoles and PC set on October 7. According to a report in Polygon, the open-world crime game is set in New Orleans in the 1960s, at a time when the Italian Mafiosi are trying to take over the crime business from the locals.
The New Orleans in "Mafia III" is one that is in the middle of a war between local African-American mobsters and the Italian mob. Because of casualties on the side of the locals, a local Vietnam veteran and former military man Lincoln Clay is out to take revenge on the Italians, in the name of his fallen comrades. Players will play the role of Lincoln Clay in the game, as he plots his revenge, as well as build his own crime empire.
A teaser trailer titled "One Way Road" gave a glimpse of the game's story and setting – New Orleans at that time was wrought with racism and prejudice and the game naturally reflected. According to a report in GameSpot, game developer Hangar 13 said this was intentional because they wanted to depict what was really going on during that time. They however said that they do not "intend to sensationalize racism."
The game will be released in three editions – the Standard Edition, the Limited Deluxe Edition ($80) which includes the game and its Season Pass and the Collector's Edition ($150) which includes the game, Season Pass, a vinyl of the game's score, an art book, art prints and some surprise items.
Gamers who pre-order the game will be receiving what 2K Games calls the "Family Kick-Back" that include three "exclusive" vehicles and weapons which are said to "lieutenant-themed."
In related news, a leak about the game "Red Dead Redemption 2" indicated a map that included New Bordeaux, the fictional town where "Mafia III" is set. Fans are already speculating that the two games may be connected somewhat.
