Man Shoots Sister and Himself Dead in Front of Church
A 76-year-old man shot and killed his 86-year old sister before turning the gun on himself outside his church where they had served for a number of years.
Clarence Porter and his sister Avis M. Whitley were found dead in a white van at the parking lot of the First Baptist Church of Grayson in Gwinnett County, Georgia. They were discovered by their brother Raleigh Porter.
“We had no idea this was coming,” Porter told 11 Alive. Ms Whitley is believed to have suffered a stroke a few weeks ago. She lived with her brother at a house in Loganville. Police cannot determine the motive for the murder-suicide.
Clarence Porter had been a long time deacon and had a key to the church. Church members told My Fox Atlanta that he showed up at the church at 8.30 a.m. to put money into the offering. He had put the offerings and church keys inside the church, before going back to the van to shoot his sister and himself.
According to the sibling’s family, Mr Porter was complaining that he had not slept for 18 days. Their brother Raleigh Porter said: “I think he just got run down and got depressed; she was not in good health either.”
The church’s Reverend Tim Brogan told the AJC that the siblings had attended the church for “a long time.”
