Man Uses Snap Map to Track Girlfriend, Stabs the Man She's With

A 25-year-old man from the south of France used Snapchat's Snap Map feature to locate his girlfriend when she did not return his calls. When he found her in a car with another man, he stabbed the person she was with.

The jealous boyfriend tracked his girlfriend to a local pool in Billere, near the Spanish border. He confronted the pair, pulled out a knife and stabbed the man his girlfriend was with on the thigh on Tuesday. He did not know the man.

Law enforcement detained him shortly after the assault, and on the same night, he admitted to the crime. He is currently in police custody awaiting trial.

The victim survived the attack and is reportedly in good condition.

The attacker has reportedly been abusive towards his girlfriend in the past. Though he did admit that he let his jealousy get the best of him, he blames such abusive behavior on his girlfriend, whom he said, seeks it.

Snap Map debuted on the Snapchat application in June. The feature allows users to tag their location on the social media platform as well as see their friends' whereabouts through Bitmoji avatars. Additionally, they could either share their location through snaps on their public stories, which should appear on a map that would allow users to track what is happening in certain areas.

What most Snapchat users do not know is that Snap Map updates their location each time they access the application. Hence, even though they do not share photos or video, the geolocation information will be shared with their friends.

Before this incident, Snapchat was already under fire for providing a potentially invasive feature, which could lead to dangerous situations. This assault only proves the worst, that deranged individuals can use it as a tool to cause harm to others.
