Maria Sharapova on Cover of Shape Magazine: Tennis Pro Reveals Diet Tips
Tennis pro Maria Sharapova says the water is an important staple of how she stays fit on the tennis court.
Ranked the third best player in the world by the Women's Tennis Association, Russian born player Maria Sharapova knows a lot about what it takes to stay in shape. But the 6' 2" tennis star admits that to do it, she hasn't ever counted calories.
Talking to "Shape" magazine, the tennis star explained that her fitness routine is based solely on tennis workouts. She practices twice daily, each workout lasting one to two hours. But while putting in time to become a tennis star is hard work, keeping thin and fit is more of a welcome by product of her efforts.
Sharapova admits that she has to monitor her weight, but not for the sake of keeping thin.
"I do weigh myself, though, to make sure I'm hydrated before matches because I sweat so much," she told Shape magazine. "Water is a huge part of my diet. I have to force myself to drink it."
Sharapova also has to monitor her diet, with only the occasional splurge. While not necessarily gluten-free, the pro told the magazine that she tries to steer clear of gluten. Instead, her diet is pack with protein, which helps builds muscle and keeps you feeling fuller longer.
Her go to "homey" meal is borscht, the magazine says, a beet soup that is prepared with meat and sour cream. And when its time to cheat, the star prefers fish tacos with spicy sauce and guacamole.
Sharapova will be in New York next week for a public appearance at Henri Bendel. Last year the Tennis Channel named Sharapova as "100 Greatest of All Time." The year before Time magazine honored her when she made the list for "30 Legends of Women's Tennis: Past, Present and Future."
