Marvel's 'Inhumans' Canceled Before Season 1 Premiere? ABC Sets Story Straight

Marvel's "Inhumans" has yet to premiere on television but cancellation talks are already getting stronger. ABC, however, is setting the record straight about the fate of the new superhero series.

News that the network canned "Inhumans" stemmed from a recently released poster that had the words "complete series" instead of the more common "season 1" tag. It drew speculations of a cancellation, especially since advanced reviews of the first two episodes, which ran at IMAX theaters last Sept. 1, have not been favorable.

But ABC reached out to Science Geek to clarify the misinterpretation. The representative from the network said that the promotional material is not new.

"Please be advised on background that this is the same promotional verbiage we've been using throughout our campaign, as this is not a new poster," the network rep stated.

Problems followed Marvel's "Inhumans" since its development. First revealed in 2014 as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the studio shifted the project from the big screen to the small screen.

Instead of developing the show as a movie franchise, ABC decided "Inhumans" will be an eight-episode series. It is, however, the first TV show to premiere on IMAX.

Marvel's "Inhumans" drew mostly negative buzz based on the teasers showcased at fan and press events over the summer weeks before its IMAX debut. Its IMAX box office result also underwhelmed.

"I just don't think the average moviegoer knew what this was," box office analyst Jeff Bock told The Hollywood Reporter. "If they did, they certainly didn't know it was debuting in theaters before its TV debut."

Marvel's "Inhumans" follows the adventures of a royal family who belong to a race with superhuman abilities. The characters initially appeared in 1965 in Marvel Comics and later, in video games and animated series. Some of the "Inhumans" characters also appeared in the second season of Marvel's "Agents of SHIELD," which airs on ABC.

Marvel's "Inhumans" will debut on Friday, Sept. 29, at 9:00 p.m. EST on ABC.
