'MasterChef' season 6 episode 17 spoilers and episode 16 recap: The restaurant takeover; Hetal is eliminated
It is now down to the top 5. The end is looming closer and closer as a new MasterChef will be named. The title of the episode is "Return of the Champions" and the synopsis states that the contestants will face a mystery box that has chocolate, tomato, pear, and portabello mushroom. The winner will create a basket for each remaining contestant with the help of three retuning champions.
The contestants will finally get to meet some past winners in the next episode. Last season's winner Courtney is back with Luca, the first and only male winner, alongside Christine, the first blind contestant on the show. The return of these three will prove to be interesting as the contestants are pushed to their limits. Who will be going home next?
In the previous episode, the top 6 faced another team challenge. It was the toughest team challenge yet, as they had to take over the service at top restaurant Chaya. Among the dishes they had to prepare was Chaya's signature tuna tartare. Stephen and Derrick are team captains. Stephen gets first pick because he has the most team wins so far. He is the captain of the red team and his first pick is Nick. Derrick, on the other hand, is the captain of the blue team and his first pick is Katrina. Stephen then chooses Claudia, sticking Hetal with Derrick.

Both teams have to replicate two appetizers and two entrees for their service challenge as they are taught by the head chef himself. All the contestants are daunted by this enormous task. The service was expedited by Gordon, and needless to say, it was very chaotic as both teams struggled. Gordon could be heard shouting at everyone due to exasperation since no food was coming out from both teams. The service of both teams was not smooth, but it looked like the blue team did better than the red.
The blue team lost yet again and they found themselves in the pressure test. The pressure test required them to make three different and difficult pasta dishes for each judge in an hour. Christina asked for manicotti, while Graham asked for squid ink pasta and Gordon asked for egg ravioli.
Katrina struggled with the squid ink pasta because she had no idea how to make it, while Hetal almost gave up making the squid ink pasta because she was running out of time. Derrick stupidly put raw sage on his ravioli, while Katrina put a dab of ricotta inside the ravioli that altered the taste.
In the end, Hetal was eliminated due to her very underwhelming performance and she predicted that Katrina would win the competition.
