McLaren 720S Release Date, Specs, Price News: 710-Horsepower Supercar Impresses at Geneva Motor Show

McLaren has once again impressed car enthusiasts with the introduction of the 720S, the second-generation supercar in the British automaker's Super Series line. It is the successor to the 650S coupe, which was released in 2014.

"Super Series is the core of the McLaren business and personifies the blend of extreme performance, crafted luxury and unparalleled driver involvement that is the McLaren heartland. This is the first time we have replaced a product family and the new 720S is absolutely true to McLaren's pioneering spirit in being a revolutionary leap forwards, both for our brand and the supercar segment," said Mike Flewitt, CEO of McLaren Automotive.

The 720S stays true to McLaren's design philosophy which is rooted in aerodynamic principles in order to deliver extreme levels of performance. As such, it has a distinct and unmistakable appearance. A notable feature of the supercar is the absence of radiator intakes on its side. It is replaced by dihedral doors whose form enables air to pass through to the high-temperature radiators to cool the engine.

Meanwhile, inside, the driver-focused cabin comes with premium leather upholstery and machined aluminum switches. These luxurious components complement the innovative McLaren Driver Interface, which is comprised of the Folding Driver Display and Central Infotainment Screen.

The McLaren 720S was built using a carbon fiber chassis translating to a dry weight of 1,283 kilograms. Despite its lightweight structure, it provides the vehicle with extreme strength and rigidity.

The supercar is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine that when mated to a seven-speed SSG transmission, delivers 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque. It is able to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour (mph) in just 2.8 seconds and attain a top speed of 212 mph. The overall result is a high-performance vehicle that is faster and more capable than its predecessor.

The McLaren 720S is available in three trims: Standard, Performance and Luxury.

Following the supercar's debut, the British automaker's bespoke division, McLaren Special Operations (MSO), also unveiled a customized version of the 720S called Velocity which showcases how customers will be able to personalize the all-new supercar.

The McLaren 720S is now available to order and first deliveries will commence in May. The supercar has a starting price of about $290,000.
