'Mean Girls' News: Cast Reunites, Tina Fey Talks Sequel Rumors

The cast of the 2004 hit movie "Mean Girls" reunited for its 10th anniversary, and they sat down with Entertainment Weekly as they talked about the film, its success and why it's still relevant after 10 years.

The film stars Lindsay Lohan as Cady Heron, the new girl who manages to join the school's mean girl group The Plastics made up of queen bee Regina George (Rachel McAdams), Gretchen (Lacey Chabert), and Karen (Amanda Seyfried). It catapulted the actresses to superstar status and the film reportedly earned $129 million worldwide.

Tina Fey, who penned the script and took on the role of Math teacher Ms. Norbury, said that she was inspired to write the screenplay after reading the nonfiction book "Queen Bees and Wannabes."

"I was thinking I'd like to write a movie about what they call 'relational aggression' between girls," said Fey to EW.

During the interview, it was also revealed that Lohan initially wanted to play Regina, while McAdams auditioned for Cady.

McAdams said, "Everyone was flipped around a bit … I was quite older at the time—I was like 24 or 25. [Director Mark Waters] said, 'I see Cady a little younger, but I think it makes sense if Regina kind of grew up a little too fast."

The film opened in April 30, 2004, and it became a phenomenon as it has become one of the most widely-quoted movies of all time, and the film even inspired its own holiday. Fans consider Oct. 3 as National Mean Girls Day, and though the holiday is usually celebrated on social media, one of the traditions that most fans do include watching the film and wearing pink in honor of the day.

Lacey Chabert said, "My new nephew was born on October 3rd. My brother came home from work and goes, 'Everyone at work keeps going, 'Oh your baby is so lucky! Your baby is born on Mean Girls Day!' He goes, 'What is that? Can you explain that to me?'"

Lohan also disclosed that singer Mariah Carey is a fan of the movie. "Whenever I see her, she does always say, 'On Wednesdays, I wear pink.' She loves that movie," she said.

As for rumors of a sequel, Fey said that at the time of the film's release, she was thinking of making the second installment to "Mean Girls."

"At the time we did want to start a conversation about the sequel, and for whatever reason I was like, 'No! We should'nt do that!'" said Fey. "Now I look back and I'm like, 'Why?' But now, no— it's too late now."

The cast members were then asked where their characters would be right now.

Seyfried said, "Karen would manage or own a store that sells really cool dog attire, like Swarovski dog collars and Halloween costumes for animals."

"Cady's with Oprah in Africa working at children's schools with a family, teaching girls to be nice to each other," said Lohan.

Chabert said, "Gretchen is probably running the Toaster Strudel empire. She is probably married and has like, seven babies right now."

"Regina is a 'Real Housewife'. She'd have too much time on her hands for sure. She's probably found all her other Reginas," said McAdams.
