The biggest lottery prize this weekend is Mega Millions' $280 million jackpot, which has accumulated since early March with no bettors lucky enought to grab the top prize.
On its official website, Mega Millions announced that the 11 p.m. draw on Friday guarantees possible winner/s with a $186 million cash option ($280 million jackpot). The last draw on Tuesday again failed to produce a top-prize winner with the number combination of 25-48-51-65-72-4.
Biggest Jackpot in Almost 2 Years
The amount at stake is considered to be the highest jackpot for the lottery game since November 2014. Mega Millions recorded its highest winnings four years ago when $656 million was shared by three bettors from Maryland, Illinois and Kansas.
However, for the past months, nobody has really been lucky to match all the number combinations for this lottery game. A press release from Mega Millions revealed that the jackpot haul of $157 million was last won on March 8.
Despite not releasing the hefty top prize to any bettor, Mega Millions said it has sold around $36 million winning tickets since the last jackpot was awarded. Thirty-one individuals got five winning numbers which earned them $5 million, at most.
How to Play Mega Millions
Now, the chances of winning a bigger prize is expected to encourage more people to place their bets before the draw on Friday night. Mechanics for the lottery game ask players to purchase Mega Millions tickets worth $1 each.
After buying tickets, they would need to choose five numbers from a pool of digits from 1 to 75 then another number from 1 to 15. There is also the option to let the machine electronically choose the combination for you. This is called Easy Pick.
The so-called Megaplier raises the winnings of players by as much as five times, but they would have to pay another dollar for this feature. This can just be a small amount compared to the possible jackpot a winner can take home.
A jackpot winner is declared when all numbers during the scheduled draw match with your chosen combination in no particular order. If one luckily wins the highest prize, he or she can go for the annuity option, which gives out a calculated payment then divides the remaining amount to 29 annual installments.
On the other hand, a player can also choose to encash the entire jackpot amount minus the tax. Every time a jackpot is won, the cash prize again starts at $15 million then grows by around $5 million for every draw that does not produce any winner.
