Jackpot Prize is Biggest Since November 2014
UPDATE - June 17, 2016 - 11:00 p.m. ET: The winning numbers for Friday's Mega Millions jackpot are 20, 23, 30, 44, 59 and the megaball is 09. The megaplier is 5x.
More than $300 million in jackpot prize can be won for Friday's draw of Mega Millions, the biggest in almost two years.
In an announcement, Mega Millions said the top winning for the lottery game is already at $310 million with an equivalent $211 million cash value. The total jackpot prize climbed to this amount after nobody matched the winning combination last Tuesday.
This is said to be the largest jackpot since November 2014 and the 11th biggest winning in the history of Mega Millions with only 10 previous jackpot winnings reaching more than $300 million.
The last time the jackpot was won was about three months ago when a bettor from Washington bagged $157 million. Since that time, the pot money started growing with no winners getting the top prize. There were, however, 35 winners of the Match 5 for the given period.
The numbers drawn earlier this week were 34,37, 38, 52 and 62 with the Mega Ball 6 number. Despite not having any jackpot winner, there was a ticket sold in California that matched five of the drawn numbers with a $1 million guaranteed win. Around 2.5 million winners also took home prizes from Tuesday's lottery draw.
Individuals who want to play can buy a Mega Millions lottery ticket worth $1 for every play. The game's mechanics state that players should pick six numbers -- five from numbers 1 to 75 and another number from 1 to 15. There is also the Easy Pick option where the numbers are electronically drawn. A Megaplier option can be added on the normal bet for a chance to increase the winnings by as much as five times the original amount.
All bets, however, should be entered by 10 p.m. to be included in the Mega Millions draw scheduled every Tuesday and Friday.
Getting all six numbers, in no particular order, drawn for the day determines the bettor who will take home the hefty lottery prize. The jackpot begins at $15 million and increases by $5 million every draw when there are no lucky winners.
WPBF explained that once a winner is declared, the player has the option to get the prize in 30 annual instalments or claim the lump sum amount minus taxes. They are only given 180 days to claim the prize for the instalment option or 60 days for the lump sum payment.
Mega Millions can be played in 44 states in the country including Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The odds of buying the winning ticket is 1 to 258 million.
