Meghan Markle Gets Extra Security; Potential Threats Against Prince Harry's Girlfriend Taken Seriously

Security for Prince Harry's girlfriend Meghan Markle has been heightened. NBC Universal is paying for the added details, not the royal family, as Markle and Prince Harry made their first public appearance as a couple.

Markle's visibility with Prince Harry increases potential threats now that the couple has publicly acknowledged their relationship, according to Daily Mail. NBC Universal is treating this seriously as Markle is a talent of the network's cable show "Suits" and there's a growing interest and curiosity about her as a prominent figure.

Over the weekend, spectators saw the couple held hands, touched, laughed together, and kissed each other at the Invictus Games, the sports event that Prince Harry organizes yearly in Toronto. They sat on the bleachers together and looked comfortable as a couple as they cheered for the paraplegic athletes.

NBC Universal's security detail for Markle includes 24-hour monitoring in her home in Toronto and on the set of "Suits." Prince Harry also reportedly went to the set girlfriend's workplace over the weekend.

"When I started working here, she told me not to worry if I see security stepped up because that means Harry is here," a neighbor of Markle said. "She has her own security people but when he is here, there are more."

NBC Universal's move to provide Markle more security has a precedent. Markle became the subject of social media attacks and abuse when her romance with Prince Harry came to light last fall. It prompted the prince to issue an official statement asking the public to respect his girlfriend's privacy.

Meanwhile, the couple's year-long relationship is fueling rumors of an engagement announcement soon. Royal watchers believe Prince Harry and Markle have been secretly engaged since their African trip over the summer.

The couple also introduced each other to their respective families. Markle allegedly met Queen Elizabeth in September, which further fueled rumors of an upcoming wedding.
