Megyn Kelly vs. Debra Messing: NBC Scolds 'Will and Grace' Star Over Bashing
NBC apparently scolded "Will & Grace" star Debra Messing in her beef with Megyn Kelly. Messing publicly bashed the new "Today" host over her comment about gay people.
An insider told Page Six that someone from the office of NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt told Messing that she should stop making comments about Kelly. The sitcom star reportedly received a stern warning from the network boss.
Messing and her three other "Will & Grace" co-stars, Eric McCormack, Sean Hayes, and Megan Mullally, were guests on Kelly's new "Today" segment. She also interviewed a gay super fan of the returning comedy who admitted that he became a lawyer because of the character Will.
Kelly then made a tongue-in-cheek joke and referred to the fan's sexual orientation as a "gay thing." The comment did not sit well with Messing and she expressed her regrets for participating in the segment.
"Honestly I didn't know it was [Megyn Kelly] until that morning," Messing posted in one of the comments on social media. "The itinerary just said Today show appearance. Regret going on. Dismayed by her comments."
Reps from Messing's camp, however, denied that the actress received a warning from the top brass. They insisted NBC has no problems with the "Will & Grace" star.
"NBC has been nothing but supportive of Debra," the actress' spokesperson told Page Six. "No one asked us to do anything."
After making her comments, Messing retweeted a photo of the cast with Kelly, which Hayes originally posted on his social media account.
Meanwhile, Kelly was in her first week as a morning show host on NBC following her move from FOX. The host was having it tough as Jane Fonda also did not like her questions when she sat as a guest on Kelly's segment.
"Will & Grace," on the other hand, returns to NBC after more than 10 years of being off the air. The show kicked off its rebooted season on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 9:00 p.m. EST.
