'Men In Black 4' Will Feature A Female MIB Agent
Another science fiction movie franchise has joined the bandwagon of movies that are considering "gender variation" within roles. After "The Ghostbusters" all-female reboot, "Men in Black" is also planning to bring in a "woman in black" in the movie's next installment. According to a report in IGN, one of the movie's producers, Laurie MacDonald, revealed during an interview that the upcoming movie will feature a female lead character.
The movie, tentatively called "Men in Black 4," is said to be a reboot of the franchise, which is a common trend among films these days. MacDonald said that "there will be a prominent woman in black in the fourth [film]." She also confirmed that she and her husband Walter Parkes will be coming back as producers of the fourth film. They were producers in the previous three films as well.
This will not be the first time to have a woman MIB agent in the franchise. At the end of the first "MIB," medical coroner Laurel Weaver, played by Linda Fiorentino, was shown wearing the black suit after becoming Agent J's (Will Smith) new partner. But this was shortlived, however, as she was nowhere to be found in "MIB 2."

According to the IGN report, the movie is still in the early stages of development so the nature of the female character and who will be cast to play it is still unknown. As far as the other cast members are concerned, Walter Parkes said that there is a chance Will Smith will return to reprise his role. "Never count Will out," he said after being asked about one of the franchise regulars. Smith has been earlier rumored to have said that he was done with the franchise and would not be returning.
"MIB 4" joins Paul Feig's all-female "Ghostbusters" and "Road House" in this recent trend of gender variation within roles in known movies.
