Panama caused a huge upset in the opening game in Group A by defeating tournament favorites Mexico. Mexico have since recovered to qualify in second place in the group, and won their quarterfinal match up against Trinidad & Tobago 1-0 to get through to this round.
However, despite improved performances Mexico have still looked vulnerable at times, and certainly not at their best. Over the past year they have been too inconsistent and that has been the case in this tournament until now.
Panama meanwhile went on to win Group A after beating the United States, and they came through their quarterfinal with a massive 6-1 win over Cuba.
Despite the fortunes of both teams in the tournament so far, Mexico will still maintain their favorites tag for this encounter, but make no mistake, this Panama side will put up a fight and will have every chance to cause another shock and take down Mexico if they are not on form.
Gabriel Torres, who has been one of the best players in this tournament and will again be Panama's biggest attacking threat tonight.
Earlier on Wednesday the United States played against Honduras in the other semifinal, and the USA came through with a confident 3-1 win. That extended the United States' winning streak to 10 straight games, which is a record for them, and they will await the winner of tonight's match for Sunday's final.
