Microsoft Surface Book 2 Hybrid Computer May Not Launch With Windows 10 Creators Update This Month

The Microsoft Surface Book 2 may not make it in time for the company's upcoming spring event this month, which will see the official release of the Windows 10 Creators Update. However, there have also been talks that the multinational tech company may be gearing up to launch a different hardware in its place.

Since Microsoft confirmed that the Creators Update for Windows 10 will go live on April 11, the tech community has been rife with talks of a possible hardware launch coinciding with the upcoming software release. And while previous speculations both included the Surface Book 2 and the Surface Pro 5, more recent news are now saying that an updated Surface Book may not make it to the launch date after all.

A source reports that the delay may be due to the fact that Intel's seventh-generation Kaby Lake chip, which is rumored to be the processor of choice for the upcoming high-end hybrid computer, has not entered production yet.

With a Kaby Lake chipset, the Microsoft Surface Book 2 can be expected to have fully integrated support for USB-C Gen 2, which will enable a bandwidth of up to 10 Gbps, as opposed to the current generation's 5 Gbps. High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) 2.2 support is native to the upcoming chipset, which will allow highly improved playback for 4K videos as well as 3D graphics.

This alleged delay can only give Microsoft more time to further improve the rumored Surface Book 2's specs and features. TechRadar speculates than since the hybrid computer may come with a higher resolution than its predecessors, it should also provide a better way of detaching the screen from the keyboard, since one of the most common complaints about the original Surface Book that was released in 2015 was its "muscle wire" locking mechanism.

The Surface Book 2 is also rumored to come with virtual reality (VR) support and an improved Surface Pen.

Microsoft has not yet released an official statement regarding the Surface Book 2 or its rumored 2017 release.
