Miguel Cotto vs Saul Alvarez Fight News: Here's the Battle of the No. 2's
WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, easily regarded as among the best fighters of his generation, will face former IBF/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in a fight on November 21 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In the past few weeks, the fight's promotion gained steam as reports allegedly revealed the sum of money each of them would take in the bout.
According to the report by Boxing News 24, the 34-year-old Cotto would bag around $30 million for the fight, while the 25-year-old Alvarez should earn about $10 million, which is reportedly his biggest purse to date.
In the report, it is interesting to note that both fighters are neither the top fighter in their respective weight divisions. Alvarez currently stands second, behind Floyd Mayweather, Jr. in the 154lb division, while Cotto also trails Gennady Golovkin from Kazakhstan in the 160lb division.
During his last bout, Cotto was able to beat Sergio Martinez, earning him the title Ring Magazine champion, in spite criticisms from other boxing fans and experts. Most of these criticisms still believe that Golovkin is way better than Cotto.
On the other hand, Alvarez already had a shot to be number one his division, although he was terribly outboxed and dominated by Mayweather during their fight last year.
For the upcoming Cotto-Alvarez fight, it will ultimately be experience vs. power and aggression. Cotto, who has become a veteran in the sport, is a dangerous fighter especially when the fight goes the distance. Meanwhile, Alvarez is an aggressor who may not be the best of defensive tacticians but can unleash a flurry of punches both inside and out.
If Cotto wins this one, he may be in line to face Golovkin, who is also preparing for his own match against David Lemieux. Meanwhile, Alvarez could fight a more skilful fighter so that critics and experts would finally take him seriously as a possible superstar of the sport.
