'Minecraft' DLC News: Console Players Can Start Flying With New 'Glide' Mini Game

"Minecraft" players on console can now start flying in the widely famous sandbox game through the newly launched mini game called "Glide."

According to the official announcement from Mojang, the set of downloadable content carrying Glide is "first in a series of free tracks to be released." The developers added that Glide is "designed to test [players'] aeronautical skills to the very limit."

With the Glide mini game, players mainly need to use a pair of elytra wings and master navigating with it for an effective attack launched from the sky. The mini game comes with two game modes. In Time Attack, players need to beat the time. To do this more efficiently, they have to go after thermal drafts and speed boosters. Meanwhile, Score Attack will require players to gather as much points as they can "by hitting all the hoops."

According to the game's art director David Keningale (through the same announcement post), the thermals will provide players the virtual feeling of riding a roller coaster. "You're flying down, and it's getting frantic and tight and then all of a sudden you get this lift up and then you sort of pause and then you dive down again. It gives you both adrenaline boosts and little breaks in the downward trajectory," Keningale further teased.

Aside from the new flying elements, Mojang has also revealed that they have explored several ideas for race tracks. However, upon launch, the only one available would be the Cavern that was inspired by the game's Battle mode map.

Level lead Michael Hansen revealed that Cavern is not just inspired by the Battle mode map, the two are actually linked together. Developers describe the track map as a "giant descending spiral." Player will need to be focused and always on the lookout because the map features varying spaces that can go from wide open spaces to tight bore-holes.

Along the course of playing Glide, developers have also teased that there are shortcuts players can discover. The DLC also comes with an update for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One that allows the number of individuals joining a multiplayer session to reach up to 16.
