'Minecraft' Players Will Soon Get a Cape to Fly

"Minecraft" will soon be adding a new feature in their upcoming PC update allowing players to fly using a special cape.

Swedish game developer Mojang has announced it will be releasing its 1.9 update, Java edition for PC, for its 3D sandbox game, "Minecraft," adding the power to fly via a special cape that will be included in the patch.

The special flying cape will not need to be crafted, however, unlike other tools and equipment in "Minecraft." Instead, players will have to find the cape when the update arrives, which will replace any existing capes a character already owns.

While players have already been given the flying ability under the game's Creative Mode, the new cape will make the ability become part of the character itself. It will also allow players to observe their environment from a bird's eye view and explore the 3D world from the sky.

Players will be able to make their characters glide, pick up speed, make flying dives, then climb back up again, with the capes folding against their characters' backs as they land. The capes will also allow them to smash windows of high towers, fly past bad guys attempting to shoot them down, swoop down onto a boat, and then paddle away.

PC and Mac players can test out the flying cape's capabilities when they download the 15w41b snapshot for the game at Mojang's website. The snapshot is a patch still in development, however, and players may find some bugs still present.

The update, which is coming to PC at an as-yet-unannounced date, will allow players enough time to start crafting their own landing pads to prepare for the flying cape when the Java edition 1.9 update finally arrives.

Console players, for whom even regular capes have yet to arrive, may have to wait awhile before they get access to the game's special flying cape.
