Minnesota Timberwolves Finalizing Max Contract Extension With Andrew Wiggins
Looks like the Minnesota Timberwolves are really going to do everything possible to lock up Andrew Wiggins for the long term.
According to 1500 ESPN's Darren Wolfson, the two sides have been working on a max contract extension worth $148 million over five years, and they are expected to come to an agreement before training camp opens this Saturday. Shams Charania of The Vertical has also reported that they are nearing a deal.
Of course, it can be argued that Wiggins does not deserve a max contract at this point in his career since there are a lot of holes in his game. But the Timberwolves are convinced that he's not even close to reaching his ceiling yet.
Wiggins is a gifted offensive player who can score from anywhere on the floor. His durability is a huge plus as well. The six-foot-eight wing has only missed one game in his three seasons in the league. However, he still has to improve his defense and playmaking ability if he wants to produce at an All-Star level.
The Timberwolves know fully well that he's an unfinished product. That much is clear. And they are willing to risk paying him the max because they believe he will continue to work on all facets of his game in the coming years.
"To me, by making this offer, I'm speculating that his contribution to the team will be more in the future. We've got to be better. He can't be paid just for what he's doing today. He's got to be better. So when you're talking about negotiations on his part, I'm already extending to him that I'm willing to meet the max. But there are some things that I need out of him, and that is the commitment to be a better player than you are today," Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor said last month, via ESPN.
