'Mirror's Edge Catalyst' Reboot News: Graphics Feature Advanced Rendering Techniques (VIDEO)

EA DICE recently discussed the advanced rendering techniques used on its reboot of "Mirror's Edge Catalyst."

"Mirror's Edge Catalyst," a reboot of the original 2008 "Mirror's Edge," was presented during the SIGGRAPH 2015 where developer EA Digital Illusions CE explained the game's advanced rendering techniques and segue to modern hardware for its upcoming launch in Q1/2016.

Newer methods that worked well with modern graphic processors and console generations were used to handle the heavy processing tasks required to run the open-ended parkour video game. EA DICE also took advantage of Asynchronous Compute to enable the game to reach more in-depth optimizations for its graphics display.

The game will be featuring several improvements and upgrades from the original title, where protagonist Faith Connors explores the futuristic city, Glass, to complete missions and escape enemies through the use of parkour movements.

Faith's adventures will be presented via physical-based renderings, with a clean and pristine look to the environment she moves in, using the same gameplay mechanics and smooth loading with no evident gameplay breakage, just as in the previous title.

The game, which is geared to be a CPU-heavy title, will feature larger-than-life environments and new rendering techniques done via low-overhead API graphics which EA DICE used to reduce draw calls, while optimizing the game.

One new development is the removal of guns from the game, considered a bold move that is expected to garner criticism from fans. However, running and the use of parkour action to engage and avoid enemies remain the same.

While the previous title showed markers leading players to their next mission objective, "Mirror's Edge Catalyst" won't be including this particular spoon-feeding feature to add challenge for players.

The upcoming game, which will have Faith going against her nemesis Gabriel Kruger, will be launched on February 3, 2016 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
