Miss World 2011 Winner Miss Venezuela, Sarcos Colimenaraes Was Raised in Nunnery (PHOTOS)
The 2011 winner of Miss World beauty pageant is Miss Venezuela, Ivian Lunasol Sarcos Colimenaraes.
Sarcos Colimenares, 22, was crowned the winner at a final ceremony in London on Sunday. She accepted the crown from last year’s winner Alexandria Mills of the United States.
“I felt the most gorgeous woman in the world,” Sarcos Colimenares told AFP. “I was so happy and I wanted to shout, to cry, to stand still and to smile. So many emotions.
“I’m incredibly happy for this moment, for this opportunity and for winning and I’m grateful with my life.”
Sarcos Colimenares has a degree in human resources and works for a broadcasting company. She was orphaned at the age of eight and was raised in a nunnery.
"Winning means everything to me and I hope to take advantage of being a winner in a productive manner," the winner said. "I first and foremost want to help people in need.”
"I would like to help people like me. I am an orphan. I would also like to help the elderly and troubled teenagers. As many people as I can."
The runner-up was Miss Philippines, Gwendoline Gaelle Sandrine Ruais, Miss Puerto Rico, Amanda Victoria Vilanova Perez was third.
Contestants from South Korea, England, South Africa and Scotland were also in the top seven.
One hundred and thirteen contestants from Albania to Zimbabwe took part in the pageant, which marked its 60th anniversary this year.
Founded by Eric Morley, Miss World was first introduced in 1951 as part of the Festival of Britain celebrations. It has franchises in over 120 countries and is cited as one of Britain’s most successful ever international television shows.
However, while the event was taking place, 50 feminists rallied outside with placards which read: “Objectification won’t achieve world peace” and “Sexism is pretty ugly.”
