'Mistresses' Updates: EP Rina Mimoun Regrets Series Not Having Graceful Wrap-Up; Show to Be Picked Up by Another Network?

Fans will never get to know the new Karen Kim now with the show's cancellation.

ABC has pulled the plug on "Mistresses" after four seasons. Up to the finale of what turns out to be its last season, many were still hoping that the show will move on to its fifth season. So now, fans are left wondering what happens now to the jaw-dropping Season 4 finale cliffhanger.

Karen Kim is dead or is she?

Earlier last week, the drama of "Mistresses" came to a close. Karen Kim (Yunjin Kim) was killed off in the series and a time jump of a little over a year took place. Joss (Jes Macallan) and April (Rochelle Aytes) are now happily married and are new mothers to baby daughters to boot. Still, they are still being haunted by their old friend Karen.

April claimed to have seen a woman who looked very much like Karen in her store. Things became spookier when a barista said that Karen bought her usual drink that day and even had a signed receipt as proof. When April decided to call Karen's brother in Korea, she was told that her ashes never made it there. Finally, at the end of the finale, a woman (Hina Abdullah) approached April and introduced herself as Karen Kim.

May be picked up by another network

Before the cancellation announcement, Executive Producer Rina Mimoun said in an interview that they made the new Karen storyline to be pretty weird and kind of "out there". This was upon knowing that Yunjin Kim will not be returning for "Mistresses" Season 5. She denied, however, that it would be something too crazy like when Lydia (Alanna Masterson) got some extreme plastic surgery.

But, now with "Mistresses" being cancelled, it probably means that the fans will never find out if Karen is alive and get the scoop on the all-new Karen Kim. Mimoun and showrunner Josh Reims were known to be pitching a final fifth season for 2017 or "a final fling", as they wanted to call it before the announcement. While ABC has opted out, another network or a streaming service like Netflix or Hulu might want to pick it up.

Steady ratings

"Mistresses" seems to have lost a big chunk of its viewers over the years. The pilot aired in 2013 had 4.4 million viewers and the finale of Season 4 only managed to attract only 2.5 million viewers. Although the series cannot be called a hit, it did have stable ratings. Despite this, it was let go by ABC. It is said that the network is shifting its focus on its game shows that have been enjoying success for two summers now.

ABC did not ask for a series finale

Before the airing of the "Mistresses" series finale, Mimoun revealed that they were not asked to write a series finale. That made her feel that they were still being given another 13-episode season for a graceful wrap-up of the series.

When asked what "Mistresses Season" 5 would have been like if they were given one more season, Mimoun said that they would have put some new hot messes into the mix. She added that they would have moved back to the kind of racy romp that "Mistresses" was when it started.
