Mitsubishi Motor Corps News: Company Confirms Mileages Tampering
Mitsubishi Motors Corp. recently released a statement about the investigations surrounding their model vehicles.
According to CNBC, there were previous reports that accused Mitsubishi Motors Corp. of tampering with their model mileages. The company recently confirmed that they have been tampering with their mileages ever since 1991.
The case was about the Mitsubishi models also known as minicars with small engines. Many were attracted to the models as they supposedly had an exceptional mileage that were released in 2013. The inconsistent information regarding the models were brought up by Nissan, which led to the investigation of the company's past.
The issue of mileage fraud is reportedly a violation in Japan's law. It was stated that buyers are able to receive tax breaks if they possess a vehicle with good mileage.
The president of Mitsubishi Motors Corp. Tetsuro Aikawa addressed the issue in front of reports last week, explaining that they are still doing an internal investigation. He said that there is no explanation yet as to why employees decided to tamper with the mileages.
While he explained that there is still no official statement regarding what the company will do about the problem, he said, "We don't know the whole picture and we are in the process of trying to determine that. I feel a great responsibility."
However, the brand is still struggling to maintain the trust on many consumers. The company has past experiences concerning the defect in their products, such as insufficient brakes, problematic clutches, and failing fuel tanks. The lack is quality management caused the recall of around a million vehicles.
One of Mitsubishi Motor's shareholders, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) recently shared their sentiments on the issues. The MHI president, Shunichi Miyanaga stated, "Mitsubishi Motors has come a long way since past problems, so this is very disappointing. We need to think about the brand image of the Mitsubishi Group, its social responsibility and accountability for performance."
